LA-based jazz quintet SML have released their new single and video, ‘Three Over Steel’. As always, it’s an impressive display of musical ability from a collective that combines jazz and indie visionaries from around LA. The end result is a blend of crunchy minimalist loops and polyrhythms, noisy ambient sounds and uniquely melodic improvisation. On the accompanying video, animator Miranda Javid explains: “To animate to the music, I drew with frayed brushes, building each frame's shape from memory of the previous drawing, rather than the traditional 2-D approach of directly tracing. The result is liquid and non-compliant.” ‘Three Over Steel’ is taken from their much-anticipated debut album, Small Medium Large, which drops on June 28th, via International Anthem. -Dan Peeke
